The Printing Girls
Contact group admin
We are a female contemporary printmaking collective based in South Africa.
This is our background story. After each of us pursuing our own thing for a few years after university, we thought a class reunion of sorts would be a good idea. We were a class of six girls, usually referred to as “the printing girls”.
Our reunion ended up being an exhibition in 2016. Not only did it get our creative mojos going again, but also it motivated us to create and print again. It sounds corny, but after enduring all those daunting crit sessions and then graduating, none of us was practicing art as we'd intended. Our first little exhibition went well, and the second one even better.
The networking and opportunities we experienced from working and exhibiting together made us think that it would be a good idea to open up to more people. Over the last few months, we have grown as a collective, and have close to 30 active members who try to meet on a regular basis for crit sessions and feedback.
Each of our TPG members is a maker of original SA prints. Some have curated notable SA print portfolios, while others are critical printmaking thinkers. Some operate their own established print studios, running workshops and working with renowned South African artists. Above all, we are supporters of growing the printmaking medium in South African and supporting our peers where we can.
